Remote location? Stunning scenery? Amazing viewpoints? Rare natural phenomena? Adventure? And some of the most unique wildlife in the world?

Normally, you’d expect those to be spread over an entire holiday.

But what if you could do all of them… in just one day?

Is this the best day trip in the world?

Komodo National Park is famous for its dragons, but there’s a lot more to the area than giant lizards.

From Labuan Bajo, you can take a day trip that combines Komodo dragons, Padar Island, Pink Beach and some excellent snorkelling. Depending on the tour, you may also get the chance to see manta rays and plenty of other marine life.

I spent a day doing exactly that, and it’s hard to think of many day trips that pack quite so much into one day.

Getting to Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo is on the western tip of Flores in Indonesia and is the main gateway to Komodo National Park.

The easiest way to get there is to fly. There are regular flights from Bali and other Indonesian cities, and most people stay in Labuan Bajo before joining a boat trip into the national park.

I’d recommend arriving the day before your tour. The boats leave early in the morning, so there’s little point making things more stressful by trying to arrive on the same day.

Labuan Bajo has plenty of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and tour operators, so it’s a straightforward place to base yourself.

Booking a Komodo Day Trip

There are plenty of tour operators offering day trips from Labuan Bajo, with different combinations of destinations. The tour I took visited six locations around Komodo National Park. The exact itinerary, price and inclusions vary, so check what you’re actually getting before booking.

In particular, check whether snorkelling equipment, meals, drinks, transfers and park fees are included. The day starts early, but that’s unavoidable if you want to fit several destinations into one trip.

Padar Island

Padar Island is probably the most recognisable view in Komodo National Park. Getting to the viewpoint involves a climb, and doing it in the Indonesian heat isn’t completely effortless. Take some water and take your time.

The reward is the famous view over three bays, with their distinctive curved beaches and the islands stretching away into the distance. If you’ve seen photos of Komodo National Park before, there’s a good chance this is the view you’ve seen.

Pink Beach

Pink Beach is exactly what it sounds like: a beach with naturally pinkish sand.

The colour comes from tiny fragments of red coral mixing with the pale sand. It’s more of a subtle pink than the sort of bright pink you might imagine from the name, but you can definitely see the difference.

The beach is also a good place to snorkel. The water is clear and there is plenty of marine life close to shore, so bring your swimming gear and snorkel equipment if your tour provides it.

Komodo Dragons

Then, of course, there are the dragons.

Komodo dragons are the world’s largest lizards and can grow to more than three metres long. They’re wild animals, so visits to the islands are always accompanied by park rangers. The rangers know where the dragons are likely to be and, more importantly, how to keep visitors at a safe distance.

Seeing one wandering around its natural environment is very different from seeing one in captivity. They’re often surprisingly still, so don’t expect them to spend the afternoon chasing people around the island.

Although the dragons are the obvious reason many people visit Komodo, they’re only one part of the day.

Snorkelling and Manta Rays

The other big attraction is what’s happening beneath the water. Several of the day trips include snorkelling stops, and depending on the conditions and the route, you may also visit an area where manta rays can be found.

Obviously, there are no guarantees with wild animals. You can visit a manta ray site and not see a single one. But if you’re lucky, watching these enormous rays glide through the water is one of the highlights of the trip.

Even without the mantas, the snorkelling is worth doing. The water is clear and there is plenty of marine life around the islands.

How Long Is the Day Trip?

This is not a leisurely day trip where you have a lie-in and wander back to your hotel after lunch.

The boats leave Labuan Bajo early in the morning and you’re out for most of the day. With several destinations to fit in, there’s quite a lot of travelling, walking and getting in and out of the water.

That makes a few things worth taking with you:

• Plenty of water
• Sun cream
• A hat
• Swimwear
• Towel
• Comfortable footwear
• A waterproof bag for valuables
• Snorkelling equipment, if it isn’t provided

You’re going to be spending a lot of time outside, so it’s worth being prepared.

Is the Komodo Day Trip Worth It?

Yes.

The reason I’d recommend it isn’t simply because of the dragons. It’s the combination of things you get to see in a single day.

Padar Island alone is worth seeing. Pink Beach is unusual, the snorkelling is excellent and seeing Komodo dragons in the wild is obviously a pretty major tick on the travel bucket list.

If you get lucky with the marine life as well, you’ve got an awful lot packed into one day.

The main thing I’d recommend is checking the itinerary carefully before booking. There are lots of tours from Labuan Bajo and they’re not all identical. If there’s something you particularly want to see – especially manta rays or a specific snorkelling location – make sure it’s actually included.

Is This the Best Day Trip in the World?

I’m not sure I’m qualified to answer that one yet. I’ve got a few more day trips to do before I can make that call.

But I’ve done plenty of day trips where one attraction is great and the rest of the itinerary is basically there to fill the time.

This isn’t really like that.

In one day you can climb to the viewpoint at Padar Island, visit a pink beach, see Komodo dragons, snorkel in clear tropical water and potentially swim with manta rays.

That’s a pretty impressive list for a single day.

So, is it the best day trip in the world?

Maybe. Maybe not.

But it’s certainly going to take some beating.

I thought exactly the same.

So, rather than trying to do the trip as cheaply as possible, I set myself a different challenge. Could I experience everything that makes the Galapagos so special while still keeping my budget under control?

The answer surprised me.

Over 17 days, I visited three islands, saw incredible wildlife, snorkelled with sea lions and turtles, went scuba diving with hammerhead sharks, explored lava tunnels and volcanic landscapes, and spent a total of just over $1,700.

That’s roughly $100 per day, including transport, accommodation, food and activities.

Prices have increased slightly since I visited in 2020, but after checking current costs, the overall approach still works remarkably well. If you’re planning your own trip, here’s exactly how I’d do it.

Transport

Getting to the Galapagos is one of the biggest expenses of the trip, but there are still plenty of ways to save money once you’re there.

Flights

I flew from Quito to San Cristóbal for $175, which I found to be excellent value.

When booking your flights, it’s worth checking both Quito and Guayaquil, as prices can vary significantly depending on the season.

Don’t Forget the Transit Control Card

This is one of those things that’s very easy to miss.

Before boarding your flight to the Galapagos, you’ll need to buy the Galapagos Transit Control Card, which costs $20. There’s a desk in the departures area where your luggage is also inspected before you’re allowed to fly.

It’s surprisingly easy to walk straight past it, so don’t assume you’ll be reminded. Make sure you’ve got your card before heading to your gate.

Bring Cash for the National Park Fee

As soon as you arrive in the Galapagos, you’ll need to pay the National Park entrance fee.

When I visited (2020), this was $100, payable in cash immediately after immigration. The price in 2026 is $200.

There isn’t time to find an ATM before reaching the payment desk, so make sure you arrive with enough cash already in your wallet.

Walking Saves More Than Money

One thing I loved about the Galapagos is just how compact the towns are.

When I landed on San Cristóbal, it was less than a kilometre from the airport into town, so there was no need for taxis or buses. I simply walked to my accommodation.

The same applies across much of the islands. Most towns are easily walkable, meaning you’ll naturally save money while also getting to experience more of the place.

If you do need one, taxis are surprisingly affordable for short journeys.

Travelling Between the Islands

The three main inhabited islands are connected by public ferries.

These generally cost $35–40 per journey and usually operate twice a day.

They’re not luxury cruises by any means, but they’re reliable and by far the cheapest way to island-hop.

A couple of useful tips:

• Sit towards the back of the boat if you suffer from seasickness, as the crossings can be surprisingly rough.
• Keep an eye on the water because wildlife sightings are common. I crossed through an enormous pod of dolphins on one journey.

You’ll also need a small water taxi to get between the ferry and the pier on some islands.

It only costs around 50 cents, but it’s worth carrying some small change.

Accommodation

Accommodation is one of the easiest places to keep costs down without sacrificing comfort.

The Galapagos has everything from luxury eco-lodges to backpacker hostels, but I consistently found the best value came from simple guesthouses.

Book Before You Arrive

I expected I’d find better deals by negotiating in person. Actually, the opposite happened. Almost every place I checked was cheaper online than walking through the front door and asking. Booking ahead also gives you much more choice, especially during busy periods.

Guesthouses Offer the Best Value

Most of the guesthouses I stayed in cost between $20 and $30 per night, and they were excellent.

Typically that included:

• Private room
• Ensuite bathroom
• Air conditioning
• Wi-Fi
• Sometimes breakfast
• Occasionally free snorkelling equipment

For the price, they represented incredible value. You certainly don’t need expensive hotels to enjoy the Galapagos.

Are Hostels Worth It?

I also stayed in a hostel for $18 per night. While the room itself wasn’t dramatically cheaper than a guesthouse, the extras made a real difference. Depending on where you stay, you might find:

• Free snorkelling gear
• Laundry included
• Free fruit
• Communal kitchens
• Rooftop terraces
• Great opportunities to meet other travellers

If you’re travelling solo or planning to snorkel regularly, those extras can easily outweigh the small difference in price.

My Recommendation

If you’re travelling as a couple or simply value your own space, I’d choose a guesthouse every time.

If you’re travelling solo and want to meet people, a good hostel offers excellent value, especially if it includes equipment hire or laundry.

Either way, accommodation doesn’t need to blow your budget.

Spending around $20–30 per night is enough to stay somewhere comfortable while leaving more of your budget available for the experiences that make the Galapagos unforgettable.

Food & Drink

I’d expected food & drink to be ridiculously expensive, but that wasn’t really the case. Like most places, there are restaurants aimed at tourists and restaurants where the locals eat. The difference in price between the two can be pretty significant.

If you’re happy eating where the locals do, it’s actually not too difficult to keep your food budget under control.

Eat Where the Locals Eat

The best value meals I found were the set lunches and dinners at local restaurants.

For around $5–10, you’d normally get a soup to start, a main course and a fresh fruit juice. They’re filling, good value and, more often than not, much better than grabbing fast food or trying to make your own meals.

The restaurants along the waterfront are noticeably more expensive, with most meals costing somewhere between $10 and $25. There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself every now and then, but if you’re watching your budget, I’d save those for the occasional meal rather than eating there every day.

Is It Worth Cooking?

I went into the trip thinking I’d save loads of money by cooking for myself. In reality, I don’t think it’s worth it.

A lot of accommodation doesn’t have proper kitchen facilities, and because so much has to be shipped over to the islands, supermarket prices are higher than you might expect. Once I’d compared the cost of buying ingredients with the price of eating at the local restaurants, it was actually cheaper to eat out.

Cheap Snacks

If you need something quick during the day, keep an eye out for the little roadside food stalls. You can usually pick up empanadas and other local snacks for around $1, and they’re much bigger than you’d expect. They’re perfect if you’re heading off on a hike or just want something to keep you going until dinner.

My Recommendation

Eat where the locals eat most of the time, enjoy the odd meal by the waterfront and don’t worry about trying to cook anything yourself.

The Best Free Things to Do in the Galapagos

This was probably the biggest surprise of my whole trip.

Everyone talks about the expensive day tours, but some of my favourite experiences in the Galapagos didn’t cost a thing. The wildlife isn’t hidden away behind fences or reserves. It’s just… there. Sea lions sleep on benches, marine iguanas wander across the beaches, pelicans dive into the harbour and turtles swim just offshore.

If you’re willing to explore under your own steam, you can have an incredible time without constantly reaching for your wallet.

Snorkel from the Shore

If you only take one tip from this guide, make it this: snorkel as much as you can.

Bring your own mask if you’ve got one. If not, most places rent them for around $5 a day, and quite a few guesthouses will lend you one for free.

One of my favourite spots was Concha de Perla on Isabela Island. It’s an easy walk from town and you can swim with sea lions, turtles, reef sharks and loads of tropical fish without paying for a boat trip. Experiences like that are what make the Galapagos feel like such good value.

Just Wander Around

Don’t underestimate how much you’ll see simply by walking.

San Cristóbal is packed with sea lions and marine iguanas, while the fish market in Santa Cruz is worth stopping at for half an hour just to watch the wildlife. Pelicans, frigate birds and sea lions all gather around waiting for scraps from the fishermen, and it’s surprisingly entertaining.

You don’t need a guide or an organised tour. Just go for a stroll.

Go Hiking

Every island has well-marked walking trails that start close to town. Within a few minutes you can be out among lava fields, beaches, mangroves or volcanic scenery, and there’s always a decent chance of spotting wildlife along the way.

It’s one of the easiest ways to experience the islands, and completely free.

See the Flamingos

Near Puerto Villamil on Isabela Island there’s a short walk out to some lagoons where you can often spot wild flamingos.

It’s an easy addition to your day and a good example of why it pays to explore on foot before booking lots of organised excursions.

Explore the Mangroves

The mangrove areas were one of my favourite places to slow down for a while.

They’re full of birds and marine life, and because everything’s so calm, you notice far more than if you’re rushing from one attraction to the next. Grab a bench, watch what’s going on around you and take your time.

Visit the Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre

If you’re on Isabela Island, I’d definitely recommend visiting the Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre.

You can see tortoises of all sizes, from tiny hatchlings right through to the enormous adults, while learning a bit about the work being done to help protect the different species. It’s free to visit and well worth an hour or so of your time.

Las Grietas

Las Grietas was another highlight.

After a short walk from Puerto Ayora, you’ll reach a narrow volcanic gorge filled with crystal-clear water. It’s a brilliant place for a swim, and if you’ve got a snorkel you’ll spot plenty of fish as well.

If you’ve got half a day to spare, I’d put this high on the list.

My Biggest Budget Tip

My approach was pretty simple.

Rather than booking loads of tours straight away, I explored each island first and did all the free activities I could find. That gave me a much better idea of which paid tours would actually show me something different.

In the end, I saved money by not paying to see animals I’d already seen for free, and when I did spend money on a tour, it felt completely worth it.

If you’re aiming to visit the Galapagos for around $100 a day, that’s probably the single best piece of advice I can give you.

Paid Activities Worth the Money

One thing I realised quite quickly is that you don’t need to book a tour every day to have an amazing trip.

There’s so much wildlife you can see for free that I’d recommend spending your first few days exploring each island before deciding where to spend your money. That way you’re paying for genuinely different experiences, rather than seeing the same sea lions and turtles from a slightly different angle.

That said, there are a few activities I’d happily pay for again.

Los Túneles

If I could only recommend one snorkelling trip, it would be Los Túneles on Isabela Island.

This incredible landscape was formed by ancient lava flows, leaving shallow channels, arches and tunnels that are now home to an unbelievable amount of marine life.

The snorkelling was excellent. I swam with reef sharks, huge sea turtles, rays and even a seahorse, which I’d never seen in the wild before. The tour then goes on land, where you’ll find blue-footed boobies nesting. Afterwards, the tour visits a small island where you’ll see pelicans and, if you’re lucky, some Galapagos penguins.

I paid $100 after booking at the last minute. Most operators were asking around $120, so it can be worth shopping around if you’ve got a bit of flexibility.

For me, it was worth every dollar.

Scuba Diving

The single biggest expense of my trip was scuba diving.

It was also the best thing I did.

My first dive was at Mosquera Island, which cost $160 for two dives. It’s not cheap, but compared with some of the snorkelling tours, the difference in price isn’t actually that huge.

The wildlife was unlike anything I’ve experienced before. We saw manta rays, eagle rays, stingrays, blacktip sharks, whitetip sharks, Galapagos sharks and a school of around thirty hammerhead sharks all on the same dive.

I honestly don’t think I’ll ever have another dive quite like it.

Later in the trip I also dived Kicker Rock.

It was a completely different experience, and while I don’t think it quite matched Mosquera, it was still incredible. The highlight wasn’t actually the sharks, but swimming through an enormous shoal of fish so dense that it completely blocked out the light.

If you’re a diver, the Galapagos is one of those places that’s worth saving up for.

Explore the Highlands

The coastline gets most of the attention, but don’t skip the highlands.

It feels completely different up there. The landscape changes from dry volcanic terrain to lush green forests, and there are loads of places worth stopping along the way.

Rather than joining a tour, I hired an e-bike for $30 for the day, which I thought was excellent value. It gave me the freedom to explore at my own pace and stop wherever I fancied.

Along the route I visited volcanic craters, giant tortoise ranches, lava tunnels and a couple of viewpoints. Some attractions charge a small entrance fee, but generally they’re only a few dollars.

If you’re comfortable on a bike, I’d definitely recommend doing it this way instead of booking a guided tour.

One thing that surprised me was how bike-friendly Santa Cruz was. Drivers were courteous, there are dedicated cycle lanes for much of the route, and at no point did I feel unsafe.

The only hazard was occasionally sharing the bike lane with cows…

Lava Tunnels

The lava tunnels are another thing I’d recommend making time for.

Some are enormous, with huge caverns that stretch underground for hundreds of metres, while others are much narrower and feel much more adventurous.

Most charge a small entrance fee, but they’re inexpensive and completely different to anything else you’ll see on the islands.

If you come across one during your trip, I’d say go for it.

My Budget Breakdown

One of the reasons I wanted to make this trip was to find out whether the Galapagos really deserved its reputation for being outrageously expensive.

The answer?

Not really.

Yes, you can spend a fortune if you stay in luxury hotels, eat in the most expensive restaurants and book a different boat trip every day.

But you don’t have to.

Over 17 days, I spent just over $1,700.

That included:

• Flights to the Galapagos
• Inter-island ferries
• Accommodation
• Food and drink
• Scuba diving
• Snorkelling tours
• Bike hire
• Entrance fees
• Pretty much everything else along the way

It worked out at almost exactly $100 per day, and at no point did I feel like I was missing out.

In fact, if anything, having a budget made the trip better. It encouraged me to walk more, snorkel from the shore, explore independently and only spend money on the experiences that were genuinely unique.

Final Thoughts

The Galapagos had been on my bucket list for years, and somehow it still exceeded my expectations.

The wildlife is every bit as incredible as people say, but what surprised me most was how accessible it all is. You don’t have to be on an expensive boat tour every day to have unforgettable encounters with sea lions, turtles, marine iguanas and countless birds. Some of my favourite moments happened while I was simply walking through town or snorkelling from the beach.

If you’re prepared to travel independently, stay in guesthouses, eat where the locals eat and be selective about the tours you book, visiting the Galapagos for around $100 a day is genuinely achievable.

For a destination that’s often described as one of the most expensive places in the world, I think that’s pretty incredible.

This time… I threw that out the window.

I crossed into Slovakia with no plan and no idea where I’d end up for the next 24 hours. Just a van, a camera, and a vague sense of direction.

Would I find somewhere to park?

Would I discover places I’d never have seen if I’d planned it?

Or would this turn into a logistical headache?

Everywhere I looked before this trip said the same thing: wild camping isn’t officially allowed. So that left me wondering…

Would I actually find decent parkups?
Would I need to go full stealth mode?
And would they even let me into the country in a van?

In this video I put vanlife in Hungary to the test. Along the way I visit a fascinating ‘socialist cemetery’, climb to a citadel overlooking the city, unwind in the famous thermal spas, and head out to experience the nightlife — all while figuring out whether this is a place you can realistically travel by van.
